Honouring a true leader
The Alex Cohen Diabetes Top-up Scholarship is a formal recognition of the life-time of support and dedication to people with diabetes, the contribution to diabetes research via the Diabetes Research Foundation of WA (DRFWA) and the successful creation of the Centre for Diabetes Research by Professor Alex Cohen AO.
Throughout his life Alex Cohen has:
- as an endocrinologist treated hundreds of people with diabetes
- mentored many young doctors and researchers
- given a voice to the medical profession at UWA
- actively engaged in diabetes research and
- has provided leadership at the highest levels to UWA, diabetes treatment and medical research
The DRFWA wishes to recognise Professor Alex Cohen's achievements through support of an annual postgraduate research scholarship for research based around clinical, cause, complications or psychological aspects of any form of diabetes.
"In my mind such a person would be enrolled in the process of attainment of a senior postgraduate degree such as a PhD or an MD the gaining of which would validate he choice. Such an outcome would prepare that person for a lifelong involvement in continuing research either in a full-time academic or part-time clinical activity."
Professor Alex Cohen AO (2009)
